Hot chocolate is a staple and it's definitely a must have during cold weather! This popular drink has been around for a long time, but did you know that it has been prized for its healing properties for over 3000 years?

Health benefits of hot chocolate: FLAVANOLS ARE AWESOME!

- Cocoa has beneficial antioxidants called flavanols, which have potential disease-fighting properties.

- Flavanols lower blood pressure and promote healthy blood vessel function that improves blood flow.

- Having improved blood flow means having improved cardiovascular health. Some of its many benefits are better endothelial function, lower blood pressure, improved vascular stiffness, and decreased total and LDL cholesterol.

- Flavanols also improve blood vessel function in the brain, which may reverse age-related memory decline in healthy older adults.

...But most commercial hot chocolate are low in flavanols (they're unhealthy!)

A health-promoting cup of hot chocolate should be be rich in cocoa flavanols but you may find these bitter compared to commercialised hot chocolate, which are full of added sugar. Healthy hot chocolate shouldn't taste too sweet.

Consider the added sugar and calories you’re adding to your cup of hot chocolate, otherwise you may cause harm to your body instead of reaping the health benefits of cocoa flavanols consumption.
